Augustus F. Hawkins Natural Park Located at the corner of Compton and Slauson Avenues in South Los Angeles, the 8.5-acre park provides a serene natural environment. Native plant communities, oak trees, rolling hills, and a running stream let you forget that you are in the urban core of the city. The elegant, Craftsman style Evan Frankel Discovery Center houses interpretive displays about nature and natural resources issues, as well as a meeting and community room. Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve (formerly Ahmanson Ranch) In the Simi Hills in Ventura County nestled at the western edge of the San Fernando Valley. The huge oak studded parkland is part of a critical ecological linkage and wildlife corridor between the Santa Monica Mountains and the ranges to the north. Now under the Conservancy’s permanent protection are diverse habitats and endangered species such as the California red-legged frog. At present, the only access to the property is at the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Trailhead and through trails headed east on the National Park Service land at Cheesebro Canyon.
Ramirez Canyon Park Within the site’s boundary lie both an exquisitely beautiful designed landscape and a rich coastal wilderness. Meadows, lushly planted flower beds, intimate sitting areas, and picturesque bridges create a story book effect. Barbra Streisand donated this 22.5 acre estate to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in December 1993. The Conservancy maintains its executive offices at Ramirez Canyon Park.
